10 Things to Check Before Booking a Short-Term Apartment Near a Hospital

Booking a place to stay near a hospital is not like booking a vacation rental. You might be arriving for surgery, a transplant, or weeks of treatment at a place like MD Anderson, and the apartment you pick can either make that stretch of your life easier or add one more thing to worry about. Here is what to check before you book.

1. How close is it, really?
"Near the medical center" can mean a five-minute walk or a twenty-minute drive, depending on traffic. Ask for the exact distance to the specific hospital or clinic you need, not just the general area. If you are staying with us, you can check exact distances for each of our communities on the Medical Accommodations properties page, or look up the campus layout directly on the Texas Medical Center site.
2. Is the price actually all-inclusive?
A low nightly rate can turn into a high monthly bill once you add utilities, wifi, and parking. Ask what is included before you book, and get it in writing. All of our stays include utilities and wifi in the quoted price, which you can confirm on our housing request page.
3. Can the lease flex if your treatment timeline changes?
Treatment plans shift. A biopsy turns into a longer stay, or a surgery gets rescheduled. Ask directly what happens if you need to extend or shorten your stay and whether there is a penalty for either. Flexible terms matter more here than almost anywhere else you would rent.
4. Is it truly furnished, kitchen and all?
Some "furnished" listings mean a bed and a couch. Ask specifically about kitchen essentials: pots, pans, dishes, and a working stove. After a long day at the hospital, being able to make a simple meal without a shopping trip first makes a real difference.
5. Is there in-unit laundry?
Shared laundry rooms or a trip to a laundromat are one more errand you do not need mid-treatment. Confirm whether laundry is in the unit itself before you commit.
6. Is there someone to call if something goes wrong?
Find out if the property has on-site staff or a live number to call for maintenance issues, not just an automated form. When you are exhausted and dealing with a broken air conditioner, a real person who picks up the phone matters.
7. Is there transportation to the hospital?
If you will not have a car in Houston, ask about shuttle service to the specific hospital campus and how often it runs. A property that is technically close but has no reliable way to get you there is not actually convenient.
8. What is the pet policy?
If a service animal or family pet is coming with you, get the pet policy in writing before you book, including any deposit or restrictions on breed or size. This is one of the most common things people forget to ask until it is too late.
9. How close are groceries and a pharmacy?
Short walks to a grocery store and pharmacy save real time and energy when you are running between appointments or caring for someone who is. Ask what is walkable versus what requires a drive.
10. What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Medical stays are unpredictable by nature. A surgery date moves, a treatment plan changes, or a loved one is discharged early. Look for a cancellation policy that accounts for that uncertainty rather than penalizing you for it. Organizations like Joe's House also maintain lists of cancer treatment lodging with patient-friendly terms, which is worth cross-checking if you are weighing multiple options.
Finding the right fit
Every one of these questions comes down to the same thing: does this place make your medical stay easier, or harder.
